Rhythm and narrative
by Viji Moorthie and Ragini Madan

Bharatanayam and Kathak are two contrasting dance forms that showcase the rich combination of imagery, rhythm, symbolism and narrative seen in Indian classical dances.

Viji Moorthie is a bharatanatyam artist and teacher based in Norwich, particularly interested in the themes exploring our connection with nature, our selves, and others through the narratives, symbols and gestures of bharatanatyam. This performance introduces and explores the imagery and metaphors from nature that are used in traditional indian poems to connect with and express our shared human emotions.

Ragini Madan has trained in ‘Kathak’ under Padmashri Shovana Narayan for over 12 years. Her style of presentation consists of a harmonious blend of Lucknow and Jaipur gharanas. She has performed in solo, duet and group compositions in various cities. In London, she has also learnt intricate Kathak techniques from Mukti Shri for 2 years. This performance showcases the natural movements, complicated footwork, breathtaking pirouettes, heart-rending mime of Kathak.
