‘A Feather is Pretty Light’ Exhibition by Zale Funston

Zale Funston (b. 2001, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is a visual artist currently based in Miami, Florida. Her practice centers on surrealist figuration and landscape, using psychedelic color palettes and layered surfaces to explore memory, grief, and the embodied experience of trauma. Through texture and repetition, her paintings reference the ways emotional experiences are held within the body and the ways we choose to process them.

Her current body of work examines the relationship between grief and femininity, drawing parallels between the transition into womanhood and the experience of losing a loved one. The paintings explore bodily awareness and the ways memory is physically held and carried within the human vessel. Her process in painting begins with spiraling, horizontal or vertical pulls of paint, a grounding gesture that mimics fascia — the three-dimensional connective tissue network in the human body often associated with the storage of trauma.
