A Solo Exhibition by Ashley Stokols

‘It was between the thing that I noticed and the other thing that I noticed that the thing that I didn’t notice went unnoticed’

A Solo Exhibition by

Ashley Stokols

15th Feb – 9th March 24

Ashley Stokols (b.2002) is a Chicago-based paintress. Hailing from Los Angeles, her work is informed by popular culture and also herself. Punchy creatures live alongside and within a solipsistic wasteland, past and present merge – Everything is happening at the same time, that is what she’ll make herself believe.

“Time travel. Seeing. Also phosphenes, which are the eye-floater pangs of light that you get by putting pressure on your eyelids. Then I was thinking about visual snow, but you already know what that is. Then it was Brownian motion, which is the staticky movement of particles suspended in liquid between cells under a microscope. Before all of that though it was me and my childhood and then it was the media I consumed as well as me until they both have become the same thing. After me, it was girls and boys and movies. All throughout it’s been orangutans and puppets though. And Cronenberg. And also minks. Poor poor minks, born to be worn, bred for a purpose which they must fulfill. In orangutans arrested development is quite common, often they reach adulthood but remain in an immature ‘unflanged’ condition. The experience of the unflanged male orangutan is diametrically opposed to that of the mink, the mink which is passed down to me and personified like how you would a Ken doll. Finally, it’s been about pareidolia, a reacceptance of an age-old truth. I am a proud and unashamed ouroboros.”
