Exhibition: James Colman

James Colman.
Working outside in all weathers and seasons, James’s paintings begin with a focus on
observational drawing as a way of immersing himself with the subject. They progress toward
dynamic compositions in oil, gouache and sometimes acrylic. He seeks to synthesise the scene
by employing the use of bold colour and assertive mark making.
Working in adverse conditions often leads to transformative and unpredictable outcomes, as he
grapples with combining his own feeling for the landscape with the pressures of working out of
doors.
In terms of subject matter, James’s eye is frequently drawn to the overlooked or unloved aspects
of the natural and urban environment, searching for a lyrical expression that characterises the
uniqueness of a place with his own personal interpretation
