Dan Richards: Dorothy Pilley’s ‘Climbing Days’ — in conversation with Peggy Hughes

The Book Hive is thrilled to welcome author and editor Dan Richards for a discussion about the life and climbing achievements of his great-great-aunt, Dorothy Pilley, and her remarkable work on mountaineering, Climbing Days.
Dorothy Pilley began her climbing career in the 1910s, during a time when female mountaineers were often viewed as a dangerous liability, their accomplishments frequently ignored, unrecorded, or met with disbelief. Despite these challenges, Dorothy made her mark on the steep slopes of Wales, Scotland, and the Lake District before venturing to more formidable terrains in the Alps, the Pyrenees, the Rockies, Mount Fuji, and the Himalayas.
A passionate advocate for fellow women climbers, Dorothy’s pioneering efforts helped pave the way for female alpinists to be recognized as serious mountaineers, celebrated for their bravery, skill, and endurance.
First published in 1935, Climbing Days recounts Dorothy’s thrilling adventures, close encounters with death, and the triumphs of reaching great heights, all while shedding light on the unique challenges she faced as a woman in a male-dominated sport.
Dan Richards will engage in conversation with Peggy Hughes, Chief Executive of The National Centre for Writing and a prominent figure in Norwich’s literary scene. Dan is an alumnus of UEA and the Norwich Art School and is the co-author of Holloway alongside Robert Macfarlane and Stanley Donwood.
Peggy Hughes, in addition to her role at NCW, serves on the board of Age UK Norwich and Open Book Reading and is the former Chair of Literature Alliance Scotland, the country’s largest network of literary organizations.
