Writers’ Workshop: “Writing the Body” with Francesca Ramsay

In an age of distraction, globalisation, and reliance on technology, we are becoming an increasingly dissociated society. How can we use writing to bring ourselves back into our bodies and our bodies back into the present – and how do we bring this physicality onto the page?
This afternoon workshop is divided into two halves. We will begin by exploring how writing can be used as a tool of embodiment. Through a series of exploratory exercises, we will tune into each of our senses and discover the power of active noticing. In the second half, we will focus on translating these sensations onto the page. Using a selection of genre-spanning and visceral examples, we will discuss writers who have brought the physical into their own writing, and use their work as a diving board to embody our own. This is a workshop for all. Discussion and sharing of work is encouraged but not enforced.
The session includes a reading and Q+A by the workshop leader.
Please bring a pen and a notebook. (Laptop optional but please also bring a notebook.) There will be breaks for tea/coffee/wine and snacks from the Holloway bar.
Workshop leader Francesca Ramsay is an art historian and writer whose work brings the two together in engaging and unexpected ways. Her book, PINCH ME (Ortac Press) follows her far-reaching journey in search of answers to one of life’s most complex and essential questions: What does it mean to feel real?
“Through asking what it means to feel real, Francesca Ramsay reaches deep into the human condition, grappling with themes of time, meaning and solitude, always with an astute eye and deft humour, allowing PINCH ME to become a book that will stay with you long after reading.” – Ali Millar, author of The Last Days and Ava, Anna, Ada
“A compelling and timely exploration of contemporary reality … I found myself completely captivated by her voice and view of the world.” -Nathan Dunne, author of Lichtenstein
“Truly such a wonderful read. There were numerous drifts of sentence and sentiment that I was unable to pass by without noting down – certain things stuck, resonated, rang so piercingly true.” Ella Frances Sanders, author of Everything, Beautiful
